Movable Type AJAX Search
I have created a brief tutorial outlining the steps required to implement search results without refreshing to a new page. This is written for Movable Type 3.2 but should work with versions 2.6 and later.

I moved over to a Linux-based server this weekend and am testing to see if my blog works... Not that I will post any more frequently...
I had a lot of trials and tribulation getting Movable Type 3.2 setup using PHP and MySQL on Windows Server 2003. This article spells out all steps required to run Movable Type 3.2 in IIS using MySQL. The article also walks the user through the steps involved in setting up phpMyAdmin to manage MySQL on their server.
Please note that this is for IIS 6.0 and Windows Server 2003. The installation/setup for Windows 2000 server is different and much more backwards (such as moving php.ini and libmysql.dll into C:\windows - yuk!

For reasons you may well know I have been blogging more these days. School is right around the corner <arrg> so this activity will likely go back to a trickle. Jenny, making reference to the book "Men are from Mars... yadda yadda", says I have been spending all of my time "in my cave". She's gone as far as to IM me from upstairs to chat. She has been telling me from the onset of my site that she wants one of her own so I finally set it up for her. The style is still the default and she doesn't really know where she's going with it yet but its up and running. Take a look! Jenny even had me make a pop-up version of my video player so she could embed some video. Jenny has posted videos from this past Easter as well as for her grandma's birthday celebration.
Well, I still have no PageRank but I'm pleased to say that I'm finally getting some respect from the search engines. I am happy to see that when you search for my name David Schwimmer doesn't show up ahead of me! This is all about ego and I admit it. I want to be the #1 result when someone searches for my name... is that too much to ask? See below for what I was ranked at 2:00AM Saturday morning. This is when searching for david catalano without "quotes".
Relevant Search Engines:
#2 Google || #1 Yahoo! || #1 MSN Search
Irrelevant Search Engines:
#2 AOL || #1 alltheweb || #1 Excite || #1 Altavista
NR Ask Jeeves/ Teoma || NR Lycos || NR Looksmart / Wisenut
I jumped to #1 in Google for a few hours once, only to fall back to low 30s again. I know I'm kidding myself to think you care but let me know if you're getting different results.
Well, my Movable Type migration was a success. I have upgraded to version 3.16 from 2.64. It went off w/o a hitch. The only thing I needed to do was reenter two nice comments (thanks Velvet & possum4all !) I do need to fix the styles for soem of the sub pages such as when you LEAVE A COMMENT <hint>
While cleaning up my computer I stumbled across something interesting. While most people were out partying in college I was creating a team website for a distributed code cracking competition. <ahem... lame... ahem>. I even created this animated gif...![]()
Be sure to check out the "member list" page complete with bios for me, Jennifer Gough , Jonathan Catalano , Chris (Hollywood) Riegger, Kevin Vig , Greg Vig , and Mike Mcgehee. These were created in early 1999 when...
"With his bow tie and dual Pentium 200's with 96 megs of RAM that runs like the wind under NT, there's nothing he can't do" ![]()
I now am the number one search result for the word eklektos. Way to go me! I am still only #34 when searching for David Catalano although #14 when putting my name in "quotes". So, link to my site and gimme some of that Page Ranking Love! I'm still a zero of ten
I have added a Photo Gallery to my site! Be sure to check it out. I will add more pictures soon.
Although I'm not exactly sure what this blog is about. I can safely say that it is not a collection of book reports - although that is seemingly all I'm posting of late. I have a number of notes from books I've read with some stuff I'd like to share. Having been in the content business I know that I need stuff of some merit to hold reader interest, so these reports are an easy way for me to start.
You'll notice that there is a Google Adsense banner on the lower right side of my site. The purpose of my site is by no means to earn any money but I see these everywhere so I was curious to sign up. I also signed up as an Amazon Affiliate. This is basically where if you buy a book after clicking on a link from my site then I get 5% or something to that effect. Again, I'm not banking on it but was curious. I'll let you know how it goes.
Eklektos is the name of this blog. Why Eklektos? I have always had an odd assortment of interests from Bonsai to Xbox. With an eclectic array of things to cover the name isn't all that unique. I just love the way it rolls off the tongue!...
This site was started in 1999 but went down after about a year until early 2005. See the first davidcatalano.com here.
Ok, everyone has one. This is the first post to my site. Welcome to Eklektos! Thus far I have been struggling with more of a theme. I'm a little scattered when it comes to interests which is why I named the site as I did...
