Thanks to our good friend Brian Creasy myself and about 20 other crazy people went camping on top of Afton mountain just outside of Charlottesville on Saturday. I brought my brand new camera but didn't remember to get it out of my backpack. The weather was what meteorologists would call "friggin' cold". Blustery 50 mph winds with lows in the mid 30's. At least it didn't snow as the weatherman predicted.
We had a good time drinking beer foam (darn keg) and rum/coke and sang songs around the campfire. Brian has known a few John Denver songs for awhile now. You know the oldies? ?Rocky Mountain High?, ?Take Me Home (Country Roads)?, and Annie?s Song? but do you know the GOODIES? I challenged him to learn ?Grandma?s Feather Bed? and boy did he ever respond! Not only did he learn it but he printed out the entire song lyrics for all 20 of us to sing along. It was a ?moment? ? brief, but a heart warming moment for sure.
Chris and Heather could have used an old feather bed that night instead of a thin blanket and backpack for a pillow. I too forgot my pillow but used two packs of leftover hotdog buns. You got to improvise when you?re roughin? it.

Here's the Lyrics for Grandma's Feather Bed by John Denver
When I was a little bitty boy, just up off the floor
We used to go down to Grandma's house every month-end or so
We'd chicken pie and country ham, homemade butter on the bread
But the best darn thing about Grandma's house was her great big feather bed
:Chorus:
It was nine feet high and six feet wide, soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty-'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids, four hound dogs and a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed
After supper we'd sit around the fire, the old folks'd spit and chew
Pa would talk about the farm and the war and my Granny'd sing a ballad or two
I'd sit and listen and watch the fire 'till the cobwebs filled my head
Next thing I know I'd wake up in the morning in the middle of the old feather bed
Well I love my ma, I love my ma, love Granny 'n Grandpa too
Been fishing with my uncle, I rassled with my cousin, I even kissed Aunt Lou... EWWW!
But if ever had to make a choice, I guess it ought to be said
That I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road for Grandma's feather bed
Yes I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road...
Whispered: (the best thing about the bed was the gal down the road)
... for Grandma's feather bed
